BOX OFFICE PREDICTIONS: Can The Rite Possess the Box Office This Weekend?

PREDICTED WEEKEND BOX OFFICE

Last week, the new romantic comedy, No Strings Attached starring Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher, shot straight to the top of the charts. In doing so, it unseated reigning champ The Green Hornet starring Seth Rogen. But with two new films entering the box office race this weekend, including The Rite with Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins, and The Mechanic starring Jason Statham, it looks like we will be crowning a new box office king.

Predicted to debut at number one this week is the new horror film, The Rite. The movie stars Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins (Red Dragon), along with Ciarán Hinds (Miami Vice), Alice Braga (Predators), Toby Jones (Amazing Grace), and Rutger Hauer (Batman Begins). Currently the movie has an average rating of a 3.9 on our site. Out of the four people who have rated the film, two of them have given it five stars and the trailer has had over 11,000 views. Here is what one of our readers had to say about the movie, "I'm am so sick of these stupid exorcism movies ... damn religious fanatics." The movie is predicted to earn about $ 18.9 million in its opening week.

Predicted to debut at number two this week is the new action thriller from Con Air director Simon West called, The Mechanic. The movie is a remake of the classic Charles Bronson film and stars Jason Statham (The Expendables), Ben Foster (X-Men: The Last Stand), Tony Goldwyn (The Last Samurai), and Donald Sutherland (Klute). Currently the movie has an average rating of a 4.5 on our site. Out of the five people who have rated the film, three of them have given it five stars and the red band trailer has had over 7,000 views. Here is what our official reviewer had to say about the movie, "A mildly entertaining action movie that doesn't blow you away but will hold your interest throughout. Statham and Foster successfully inject life into what would otherwise be just another mindless action flick." The movie is predicted to earn about $ 16.4 million in its opening week.

Predicted to drop two places from its debut last week to number three is the new romantic comedy from director Ivan Reitman (Ghostbusters), called No Strings Attached. The film features an all-star cast that includes Natalie Portman (Black Swan), Ashton Kutcher (Killers), Lake Bell (What Happens in Vegas), Cary Elwes, (Saw 3D) and Oscar winner Kevin Kline (A Fish Called Wanda). Last week, the film made $ 6,726 on each of its 3,018 screens for an opening weekend total of $ 20.3 million. Considering that the movie only cost $ 25 million to make, it came very close to earning back its entire production budget in its opening weekend. The movie is predicted to earn an additional $ 13.8 million this weekend.

Predicted to fall two spots from last week to number four is the new film from director Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), The Green Hornet, which is based on the classic super-hero TV series from the '60s. The movie stars Seth Rogen (Superbad), Jay Chou, Cameron Diaz (In Her Shoes), Tom Wilkinson (Batman Begins), Edward James Olmos (I'm Still Here), and Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds). While the movie fell 46.0% last week from the previous week, it earned $ 5,050 on each of its 3,584 screens for a weekend total of about $ 18.1 million. Now in two weeks of release, the film has made $ 63.4 million, which is a little over half of its $ 120 million production budget. The movie is predicted to earn an additional $ 13.7 million this weekend.

Predicted to round off the top five, and slip back one place from last week is The King's Speech. The film stars Colin Firth (Bridget Jones's Diary), Helena Bonham Carter (Alice in Wonderland), Guy Pearce (Memento), Geoffrey Rush (Pirates of The Caribbean: The Curse of The Black Pearl), and Michael Gambon (Layer Cake). While the film only went up 0.2% last week from the week before, it was added in 137 theaters for a total of 1,680. The movie earned $ 5,455 on each screen for a weekend total of $ 9.1 million. In over two months of release, the film has now earned a total of $ 58.6 million at the box office, which is almost four times its initial $ 15 million production budget. The movie is predicted to earn an additional $ 9.9 million this weekend.

The rest of the top ten films at the box office this weekend are predicted to look like this:

Predicted to drop one spot from last week to number six is No Country for Old Men directors Joel and Ethan Coen's True Grit, a remake of the classic John Wayne film. The movie stars an all-star cast, which includes Oscar winners Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart) and Matt Damon (Good Will Hunting), Oscar nominee Josh Brolin (Milk), Barry Pepper (Saving Private Ryan), and newcomer Hailee Steinfeld. While the movie dropped 27.3% last week from the week before, it was added on 5 screens for a total of 3,464. The film earned $ 2,309 on each screen for a weekend total of about $ 8 million. In it's first five weeks of release the movie has now made $ 138.6 million, which far surpasses its initial $ 38 million production budget. The movie is predicted to earn an additional $ 8.1 million this weekend.

Predicted to fall a dramatic four places from last week to number seven is the latest film from director Ron Howard (Backdraft), the best-friends comedy, The Dilemma. The movie stars Vince Vaughn (Old School), Kevin James (Grown Ups), Jennifer Connelly (Blood Diamond), Winona Ryder (Black Swan), Channing Tatum (Dear John), and Queen Latifah (Chicago). While the movie fell 45.4% last week from the week before, it earned $ 3,305 on each of its 2,943 screens for a weekend total of about $ 9.7 million. In two weeks of release, the film has made about $ 33.3 million, which is almost half of its $ 70 million production budget. The movie is predicted to earn an additional $ 7.7 million this weekend.

Predicted to slip two places from last week to number eight is the new film from director Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler), Black Swan. The movie examines the competitive world of ballet. The film stars Natalie Portman (Garden State), Mila Kunis (The Book of Eli), Winona Ryder (Edward Scissorhands), Vincent Cassel (Ocean's Twelve), and Barbara Hershey (Beaches). While the movie fell 29.6% last week from the week before, it earned $ 2,439 on each of its 2,407 screens for a weekend total of about $ 5.8 million. In just over two months of release the movie has now made $ 83.2 million, which is over six times its initial $ 13 million production budget. The movie is predicted to earn an additional $ 7.6 million this weekend.

Predicted to drop one spot back from last week to number nine is the critically acclaimed new film from Three Kings director David O. Russell, entitled The Fighter. The movie is based on the true story of boxing champ Micky Ward and stars an impressive cast of actors including Mark Wahlberg (The Other Guys), Christian Bale (The Dark Knight), Amy Adams (Leap Year), and Melissa Leo (Don McKay). Last week, the movie dropped 18.4% from the week before and was shown on 139 less screens, for a total of 2,275. It earned $ 1,831 in each theater for a weekend total of $ 4.1 million. In addition to winning Golden Globes for actors Christian Bale and Melissa Leo, the film has now earned $ 72.6 million in seven weeks of release, which exceeds its $ 25 million production budget. The movie is predicted to earn an additional $ 5.1 million this weekend.

Finally, predicted to fall two places from last week to number ten is the third chapter of the popular Meet the Parents series, Little Fockers. The film features returning stars Ben Stiller (Tropic Thunder), Teri Polo (The West Wing), Owen Wilson (The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou) and Oscar winners Robert De Niro (Raging Bull), Barbra Streisand (Funny Girl) and Dustin Hoffman (Tootsie), as well as new cast members Jessica Alba (Sin City), Harvey Keitel (Cop Land), and Laura Dern (Jurassic Park). While the movie dropped 40.0% last week from the previous week, it was seen on 415 less screens for a total of 2,979. The film earned $ 1,450 on each screen for a weekend total of about $ 4.3 million.
