Does Marvel Want Jared Leto to Play 'Doctor Strange'?

Shortly after it was announced that Sinister and Deliver Us from Evil director Scott Derrickson is taking the helm on Marvel's Doctor Strange, Badass Digest claims that Marvel and Disney are eyeing Jared Leto for the lead.

This, of course, has not been confirmed by Disney or Marvel. The news comes from a source deep within Marvel, who claims the studio has been looking at the Dallas Buyers Club Oscar winner and 30 Seconds to Mars front man for quite some time. Though, Badass Digest doesn't know if Marvel and Disney are still interested in this particular choice.

The same story also reports that Scott Derrickson sought out Doctor Strange as a writing project before becoming interested in it as a director. While that may or may not be true, the original story did not mention a writer's name being attached to the project.

Doctor Strange is believed to be in the same tone as Iron Man, with the story focusing on brash, cocky young neurosurgeon Stephen Strange. He suffers an accident that ruins his hands and ends his career. Traveling deep into the Himalayas, he becomes a student of the Ancient One and learns to use magic, becoming the earth's protector, saving humanity from any number of mystical threats. The Dread Dormmamu has been the villain in early drafts of the script, with the latest rewrites rumored to contain three separate villains.

While Doctor Strange begins to heat up, Marvel is still desperatly searching for an Ant-Man director.

'Warrior' Director Gavin O'Connor Boards 'Massacre in the Himalayas'

Warrior director Gavin O'Connor has signed on to direct the action-adventure Massacre in the Himalayas for producer Gianni Nunnari's Hollywood Gang Productions.

The project is based on a Men's Journal article written by Freddie Wilkinson, which centers on an international team of mountain climbers trying to reach the summit of K2 in Pakistan, when they are attacked by dangerous extremists. The article was published in August 2013, which recounted how these terrorists killed 10 climbers and a local Pakistani cook.

Here's what director Gavin O'Connor had to say about the project in a statement.

"I love the idea of using the colossal backdrop of K2, the second highest peak on earth, to explore a man's battle for survival against the Taliban, nature, and himself. Our hero becomes a one-man army on a quest to avenge the deaths of his mountaineering team. His experience becomes a living nightmare, a lifetime journey, and a redefinition of the man."

Producer Gianni Nunnari had this to say in his statement.

"Massacre In The Himalayas is a Hollywood Gang kind of movie. It's hard-hitting and it's about extreme men in extreme circumstance. And Gavin is our perfect filmmaker; no one else brings his level of intensity or creates his kind of nuanced characters."

The producers are currently seeking a screenwriter to adapt the magazine article. No production schedule was given.

Gavin O'Connor's next film, Jane Got a Gun, which stars Natalie Portman and Ewan McGregor, hits theaters February 13, 2015.

Director Adam McKay Pulls Out of 'Ant-Man' Negotiations

Just hours ago, we reported that Adam McKay was in deep talks to take over Marvel's Ant-Man as director, after Edgar Wright walked away from the project more than a week ago. Now comes news that Adam McKay has pulled out of negotiations at the last second.

The decision is said to be his alone. While talks began in earnest on Friday, it wasn't until today that the man behind both Anchorman comedies decided it was a bad idea to get tangled up with Marvel Studios.

The director search now continues, as Marvel is desperate to hold onto this Phase Three adventure's July 2015 release date. Rawson Marshall Thurber, known for the comedy hits Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story and We're the Millers, and Ruben Fleischer, the man behind hits Zombieland and 30 Minutes or Less, were both said to be frontrunners for the project, but they never entered into talks.

Its believed that Ruben Fleischer refused to take on the project so that he could spend more time with his wife and newborn before climbing into the director's seat of the Ghostbusters reboot. Sony Pictures has not confirmed that as true as of yet, and he may still be in the running for Ant-Man. Though, with Adam McKay now out completely, that pushes Rawson Marshall Thurber back into the lead.

Might we suggest Bobcat Goldthwait? No, seriously...

Expect to see some more names thrown about very shortly.

Ant-Man comes to theaters July 17th, 2015 and stars Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Michael Pena, Clifton Collins Jr., Evangeline Lilly, Patrick Wilson, Corey Stoll.
