Godzilla is the king of summer movie blockbusters! For a hot minute, anyway. Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures are claiming the iconic giant lizard has pulled in the biggest opening day of the year with an estimated $ 38.5 million. This beats Captain America: The Winter Soldier, who pulled in $ 36.9 million this past April.
Godzilla is estimated to earn a little over $ 98 million over the course of its three day weekend, and it may even make it to the $ 100 million mark. Captain America: The Winter Soldier took in $ 95 million over the course of its three day weekend.
Godzilla's reign as the top opener of 2014 may be short lived, though. X-Men: Days of Future Past opens this coming weekend, May 23, for the Memorial Day holiday and is expected to pull in over $ 100 million. The film is already being received well by both critics and early audiences.
Godzilla took in $ 6.2 million just at IMAX theaters alone, accounting for 16% of its Friday grosses. This makes it the largest IMAX opening of the year, beating The Amazing Spider-Man 2's $ 3.88 million from last month.
Godzilla currently has a B+ CinemaScore and is fresh with 73% at Rotten Tomatoes.
Godzilla was released May 16th, 2014 and stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Cameron Adams, Ken Watanabe, Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Olsen, Carson Bolde, Sally Hawkins, Juliette Binoche. The film is directed by Gareth Edwards.
