This morning, actress Kristen Bell and creator Rob Thomas announced that they were moving forward on the long-awaited Veronica Mars movie by asking fans for $ 2 million through Kickstarter. Less than twelve hours later, their goal of $ 2 million has been met, and the movie is officially greenlit.
The Veronica Mars Kickstarter project is the fastest and largest fund raiser in the history of crowd-funded movies, and is sure to inspire many copycats in the business. The $ 2 million goal was reached shortly after 6 pm. Warner Bros. is now committed to a summer start date for the movie, which is based on the Veronica Mars series that launched in 2004 on UPN and ended its run as part of The CW in 2007. A big screen adaptation has been promised to the fans ever since the series was canceled, and now those plans are finally coming to fruition.
Rob Thomas had this to say about reaching his goals set forth this morning.
Kristen Bell continued with this.
The Kickstarter goal was Warner Bros.' last ditch effort for getting Veronica Mars to the big screen. The movie will get a limited theatrical release as well as a VOD release. Rob Thomas added that the studio was eager to try out this Kickstarter campaign.
