Latest News: Star Wars Rebels TV Movie Debuts This Summer

While Disney's Star Wars: Episode VII is still shrouded in secrecy, the studio is starting to reveal more information regarding the upcoming TV series Star Wars Rebels. We already knew that the show would debut with a one-hour premiere on The Disney Channel this fall, before it transitions to its regular home on Disney XD. However, the studio has now revealed in their annual shareholder letter that the show will actually kick off with a TV movie this summer, followed by a number of short films before the series premiere.

Here's what Disney CEO Robert A. Iger had to say in an excerpt of the letter.

"The rich universe of Star Wars has tremendous creative potential for the entire company. While the world eagerly awaits Episode VII to open in theaters, we're introducing Star Wars Rebels to television audiences this summer with a movie and a series of shorts on Disney Channel, followed by a continuing series on Disney XD. Our success in building a robust pipeline of original Star Wars content for various platforms will be an integral part of our long-term strategy to leverage the franchise across a variety of our businesses, from theme parks to consumer products."

The series takes place between Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope, centering on the formation of the Rebel Alliance, as a new villain dubbed The Inquisitor hunts down the remaining Jedi Knights. Along with The Inquisitor, who was first revealed in October, the series will also feature a new droid named Chopper. The main story will take place on an Outer Rim planet known as Lothal.

We'll keep you posted as soon as we have any official details about when this Star Wars Rebels movie will debut on The Disney Channel.
