Jon Hamm to Star in The Sound and the Fury for Director James Franco

James Franco to direct The Sound and the Fury

James Franco is eyeing a return to the director's chair once again, setting up an adaptation of William Faulkner's classic novel The Sound and the Fury, with Jon Hamm eyed for a starring role.

The novel, which was originally published in 1929, follows the Compsons of Jefferson, Mississippi, a family of aristocrats who fall on hard times in the early years of the 20th Century. Jon Hamm will play the family patriarch Jason Compson III, with James Franco also starring in an unspecified role. The actor-director revealed he also wants to cast his brother Dave Franco as the suicidal Quentin Compson, along with his This Is the End co-star Danny McBride.

James Franco will direct from a script he co-wrote with former Yale roommate Matt Rager. The film will be financed independently. Here's what the writer/director/star said they almost have financing secured.

"We're in pretty good shape, but there are a few more things that have to happen before we're good."

It isn't known when production will begin. James Franco most recently directed As I Lay Dying, another William Faulkner adaptation which stars Richard Jenkins, Logan Marshall-Green, Danny McBride, and Tim Blake Nelson.
