Liev Schreiber and Peter Sarsgaard Join Pawn Sacrifice

Liev Schriber joins Pawn Sacrifice with Peter Sarsgaard

Peter Sarsgaard and Liev Schreiber are in talks to star alongside Tobey Maguire in Pawn Sacrifice. We reported in August 2012 that Edward Zwick signed on to direct.

The Cold War-era drama is based on the true story of chess legend Bobby Fischer (Tobey Maguire), who became the youngest grand master in chess history. The story is set in 1972 when, after an unprecedented winning streak, Fischer reached the world championship finals against the seemingly unbeatable Soviet master Boris Spassky (Liev Schreiber). Peter Sarsgaard is playing a priest who becomes Fischer's confidante during this period.

Steven Knight (Chef, Eastern Promises) wrote the screenplay, with Tobey Maguire and Edward Zwick producing alongside Gail Katz. The project has been in development for several years, with David Fincher circling the project back in March 2010. Production is slated to begin next month in Montreal.

Peter Sarsgaard is coming off roles in Blue Jasmine and the AMC drama series The Killing. Liev Schreiber stars in director John Turturro's upcoming comedy Fading Gigolo, and he starred as the title character on Showtime's Ray Donovan, which wrapped up its first season this past weekend.

Pawn Sacrifice comes to theaters in 2013 and stars Tobey Maguire, Peter Sarsgaard, Liev Schreiber. The film is directed by Edward Zwick.
